Mobile commerce
- Two in three Brits think the PIN will die by 2020 – 67 per cent of UK consumers think the four-digit PIN will be obsolete within five years. Instead, they’ll be using contactless cards and mobile wallets.
- 39 per cent of Americans will shop via mobile this holiday season – A new study by INSIDE Secure says 39 per cent of US shoppers will shop inside mobile sites and apps as the gift buying season warms up. 33 per cent did so last year.
- 21 per cent of people with access to Apple Pay have used it – The vast majority of iPhone users that can run Apple Pay haven’t yet done so, says a new report by Trustev.
- The number of stores accepting card payments set to double in five years – Consulting firm RBR says the base of card accepting retailers will double from 46.6 million at the end of 2014 to 90.3 million by 2020.
- 21 percent of Starbuck’s in-store transactions are made by mobile – Company just revealed its fourth quarter earnings, and confirmed that one fifth of purchases were made using a mobile device.
- McDonald’s app serves 1.5m redemptions in two months – Late this summer McDonald’s included offers in its own branded app for the first time. Now, it says the app’s 2m customers have redeemed 1.5m of them.
Mobile Advertising
- Mobile banner ad engagements rose 14 per cent in Q3 – Banner engagement was up 14 per cent in Q3, with interstitials eight per cent higher. Expandable banners grew 0.87 per cent, says Celtra.Celtra believes the improved engagement rates can be explained by the emergence of bigger screens and smarter marketing.
- 78 per cent of Facebook’s advertising revenue comes from mobile – New quarterly numbers from the social network show mobile ads alone accounted for $3.35bn of the total $4.29bn ad revenue.
Mobile Industry
- Mobile data traffic set for 10x increase – mostly because of video – Ericsson’s twice-yearly Mobility Report just raised its forecast for mobile data traffic. By 2021, monthly smartphone data consumption per active subscription in North America will be 22 GB, in Western Europe 18 GB) and in Asia Pacific 7 GB.
- North America’s $670 billion mobile market is the biggest in the world – According to the GSMA’s report, ‘The Mobile Economy – North America 2015’, the region is now home to more than 250 million unique subscribers.
- IoT security market to hit $464m by 2020 – Zion Research says the market was valued at $55.6 million in 2014, but will scale to $464 million in 2020.
- Adult site mobile traffic accounts for a third of all malware attacks – The 2015 State of Mobile Malware Report from Blue Coat Systems says pornography jumped from 16.55 per cent in 2014 to over 36 per cent this year as the source of traffic heading to a malicious site.
- The mobile eye tracking market was worth $183.3 million in 2014 – Markets and Markets says the sector will grow at a CAGR of 35.2 per cent between 2015 and 2020.
- Africa will have one billion mobile broadband connections in 2020 – A report by Ovum paints a picture of rapid mobile broadband uptake in Africa, with penetration soaring from 147 million at the end of 2014 to 1bn by 2020.
Handsets & Wearables
- 360 million Android Open Source Project handsets to ship this year – A new report by ABI Research says more than 360 million Android Open Source Project phones will ship in China and other emerging markets in 2015.
- One in four phones sold in India is ‘made in India’ – Indian handset makers such as Micromax, Lava and Intex are chipping away at the big global brands in their domestic market, says the latest quarterly sales report by Counterpoint.
- E-reader and MP3 player markets battered by smartphones – Ownership of e-readers in the US has almost halved in barely two years, says a study by Pew Research. It says 32 per cent of US consumers owned an e-reader in early 2015. Now it’s 19 per cent.
- Mobile accessory market to reach $81.5 billion in 2015 – ABI Research says global revenues for mobile accessories will hit $81.5 billion this year and will grow to $101 billion by 2020.
Messaging
- Teenagers post 38 per cent more on SnapChat than Facebook – A study by market research firm Wildness suggests that ‘millennials’ between 12 and 24 post 38 per cent more on Snapchat on a daily basis than on Facebook.
- Snapchat now hosting 6 billion videos a day – The messaging firm was serving two billion views as recently as May.
- 1.4bn people will use mobile messaging apps this year – A new report by eMarketer says that by 2018 the number of chat app users worldwide will reach 2 billion and represent 80 per cent of smartphone users.
Apps & Gaming
- Enterprise app market will gross $63bn by 2020 – The space earned $40.5 billion in 2015 but will hit $63bn by 2020, according to the latest research note from Strategy Analytics.
- Mobile gaming is now a $25 billion market – A report from EEDAR reckons the US, Japan and China are the market’s powerhouses, worth $5.41 billion, $5.16 billion and $5.01 billion respectively.
- South East Asia on target for $2.4 billion games market by 2019 – A new report by Niko Partners says the number of people playing mobile games should double those playing PC games in the region by 2019.
- Indian mobile gaming market set to grow 50 per cent a year – NASSCOM projects the market will keep growing on the back of smartphone ownership that will rise by 100 million every year.
