The Spanish telecom market has experienced the most significant structural transformation of any major European market over the past decade. The 2024 merger between fourth-placed Masmovil and declining third-placed Orange Spain created MasOrange, a new entity holding 41.32% of the market — instantly dethroning Telefónica’s Movistar (25.95%) as the decades-long market leader.
Simultaneously, Romanian challenger Digi Spain emerged with 8.39% share. The formation of MasOrange validates the long-term bullish thesis on Masmovil, whose doubling of market share from 9.22% in 2017 to 20.17% in 2023 culminated in this strategic merger.
The consolidation also reduces the number of tier-one telcos in Spain, which may help ease the intense price wars that have eroded ARPUs over the last ten years.
